Community effort hosting weekly small group sessions that promotes the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and integrity.
[Albany, NY] - One year ago, the Beestera Foundation launched its signature ‘Just Play’ program. Today, the program has expanded across the Capital Region, engaging dozens of youth in free soccer programming.
On Tuesday, Just Play concluded its first session at Sheridan Preparatory Academy (SPA) in Albany. The program welcomed 50 SPA students in grades one through five for 8 weeks of free play and camaraderie. Just Play teaches participants the fundamentals of soccer, while offering valuable life lessons along the way. Serenity Adams, participant and second grade student, noted her favorite part of the program was playing in the scrimmages and spending time with her coaches. “When I did not know how to do a scissors move, my coaches helped me, and now I can do it during a game!”
“It wasn’t just the kids who responded well to the program, it was also the families. It is always so important to engage the children but also the parents and families,” explained Principal Zuleika Sanchez-Gayle. “They were so excited for every Tuesday. I was so happy because it brought the children and families together here at SPA for a fun and positive experience.”
Just Play is led by Josh Binfield, director of the Beestera Foundation and elementary physical education teacher at the City School District of Albany. Binfield attributes the program’s success to the dedication of volunteers. “Just Play SPA featured seven volunteers, all of whom are high school soccer athletes. They coached weekly small group sessions that touted the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and integrity. It is incredible to see these aspiring coaches share their passion for soccer with kids in their community.”
All volunteer coaches with the Beestera Foundation are eligible to receive their U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) Coaching License. Next month, all Just Play volunteer coaches will complete their USSF Grassroots Coaching Pathway certificate, the first in a series of professional coaching courses.
SPA is one of four Just Play locations across the Capital Region. Additional sites include Thomas O’Brien Academy of Science and Technology in Albany, Troy YMCA, and Mont Pleasant Middle School in Schenectady.
