The second annual Grassroots Cup delivered another fantastic night in the Capital Region, with community spirit, and football for a cause. Hosted by Spindles United at Alumni Field in Cohoes, over 470 fans showed up for a true summer showcase.

Beestera FC was proud to take part, fielding a team made entirely of current staff members. And while Spindles brought the energy and youthful legs, let’s just say Beestera brought... experience. The average age on our side may have been closer to a coaching license than a college roster, but we showed there’s still plenty left in the tank.

The Match

With vendors, food trucks, music, and even Penelope the Tiny Horse on site, the night started as a festival and ended in drama.

Spindles took the lead just before halftime when John Locicero volleyed home his ninth of the season. The second half saw Spindles continue to press, hitting the post three times, but Beestera stayed organized and dangerous on the counter.

After a missed penalty, it looked like the opportunity had slipped away. But with under five minutes to go, James Beeston brought the ball down, rounded the keeper, and buried the equalizer. 1-1.

The Shootout

With regulation ending level, the match went to penalties. Both teams converted under pressure, but Spindles came out on top 6-5 after a decisive save in the final round. A tough way to end, but a thrilling night from start to finish.

More Than a Game

Thanks to Spindles United’s generosity, the 50/50 raffle raised $421, all donated to the Beestera Foundation, helping expand access to coaching, mentorship, and equipment for underserved youth.

We’re incredibly thankful to Spindles for hosting, and for making the Foundation part of their mission this year. Events like this show what grassroots football is all about - connection, community, and the love of the game.

To our staff-turned-players, thank you for dusting off the boots. And to Spindles, thank you for the battle and the hospitality. Rematch next year?
